Ok, after looking at my blog for 10 seconds you realize that I am a complete nerd. Now I am about to take it to the next level. I am a Lost Junkie. I like to talk about it with my friends/co-workers and I love to watch the show. I also LOVE how they work every cool little physics, math, numerology, psychology, and sociology theory and application into the show. You can just watch the show, you can be into the show, and you can do hours of research learning about wtf they are talking about in the show. If you do the last one, you have to be observant. You have to be willing to catch the little things, and look them up.
This leads me to the most recent video clip released by ABC. It is the one about the “Orchid Station”. The actor (scientist in the show) mentions the Casimir Effect. So I looked it up, and was reading it while talking to my friend. What is amazing is that I came up with theories from the wiki article before I got to them in the page, and I postulated some very cool stuff. So, I am posting my conversation about it here. The only thing I edited was my screen name and the screen name of my friend, as well as some of the spelling errors:
[19:58] Josh: So what do you think?
[19:58] Matt: i don’t know…
[19:58] Matt: interesting
[19:59] Josh: yup they make it as mysterious as they possibly can
[19:59] Matt: for sure
[19:59] Matt: (Link: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Casimir_effect)http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Casimir_effect
[20:00] Josh: but they are shocked the rabbit appears out of no where. Like it wasn’t suppose to happen. So I’m thinking maybe they use the same tech to make the island appear, disappear
[20:01] Josh: or the same malfunctioning tech
[20:01] Matt: actually, that makes sense that they could find the island after they blew up the hatch
[20:01] Josh: how so?
[20:01] Matt: if it was causing the island to hide, using the Casimir effect to push it somewhere… using the giant magnetron or whatever
[20:03] Josh: doesn’t the Casimir effect only apply to the quantum level?
[20:03] Matt: In this case, the correct way to find the zero point energy of the field is to sum the energies of the standing waves of the cavity.
[20:03] Josh: ok you just geeked over my head there
[20:03] Matt: yes, it does but…if the source atom has enough energy, or a big enough electromagnetic field…then you should be able to extend it beyond the quantum level
[20:05] Matt: also: “Further research has shown that, with materials of certain permittivity and permeability, or with a certain configuration, the Casimir effect could be made repulsive instead of attractive, although there are no experimental demonstrations of these predictions.”
[20:05] Josh: so, in layman terms, what does the Casimir effect have on the island?
[20:06] Matt: in other words, my theory is that they used the large magnetic thing in the ground to cause the Casimir effect in reverse…to push everything away
[20:06] Matt: kind of like in Harry Potter with their charms they set up so that Muggles don’t stumble upon their hiding spots
[20:06] Josh: you mean resulting in “hiding” the island?
[20:07] Matt: its like walking into the woods, getting to a certain spot, and wondering why the fuck you just walked there, and turning around to go home
[20:07] Matt: Yes
[20:07] Josh: I also think the rabbits have something to do with the (lack of) fertility but don’t know how they tie in
[20:08] Matt: well, if it is the zero point of a HUGE electromagnetic system it is possible that fertilized embryo’s may not be able to survive the magnetics
[20:08] Josh: that just what i was going to say
[20:08] Matt: or the “radiation” of energy released or absorbed into the zero point…kind of like a vacuum of energy
[20:10] Matt: The whole thing, as it seems, about the Casimir effect is that you can find the zero point, where the energy isnt. (from what I understand, Your talking quantum physics with a kid who took 2 years of college physics). It seems to me that it would be kind of a like the other side of a black hole.
[20:10] Matt: Where in the black hole sucks the energy in, the zero point here is where the energy is released.
[20:11] Matt: i.e. the next sentence in the wiki article: “Exotic matter with negative energy density is required to stabilize a wormhole.[2] Morris, Thorne and Yurtsever[3] pointed out that the quantum mechanics of the Casimir effect can be used to produce a locally mass-negative region of space-time, and suggested that negative effect could be used to stabilize a wormhole to allow faster than light travel.”
[20:11] Josh: but there is no way to survive entering a black hole, except maybe a wormhole
[20:11] Matt: unless you have a negative Matter, which would counteract the effect of the black hole, and cause it to destabilize
[20:12] Josh: i’ll just grab some negative Matter, put it in my backpack then toss it into the black hole when I get there
[20:13] Matt: yeah for sure
[20:13] Matt: or, just create a large enough zero point, from a large enough magnetic force, and go wherever the hell you want
[20:16] Josh: but then there is the question of where did the magnetic force come from or how did it originate?
[20:16] Matt: remember when Locke blew up the Hatch, and the machine that it was hiding
[20:16] Matt: ?
[20:16] Matt: and then the lady showed up
[20:17] Josh: i remember when Locke blew the hatch but what machine are you talking about?
[20:17] Matt: My personal theory is that the hatch they found was covering the thing that created the large zero point, and hid the island
[20:17] Josh: what lady?
[20:17] Matt: Ok, when Desmond put the key into the lock, underneath of the rooms below the hatch
[20:17] Josh: yes
[20:17] Matt: and then the last couple of episodes, the lady from the helicopter showed up
[20:17] Josh: oh penny
[20:18] Matt: um…penny was the one that was looking for Desmond. but there was the other chic that fell from the helicoptere
[20:18] Matt: helicopter
[20:18] Josh: the machine your are talking about is the fail sale Desmond turned the key on?
[20:19] Matt: yeah
[20:19] Josh: ok her, i don’t remember her anywhere except landing on the island in a parachute
[20:19] Matt: yeah
[20:20] Matt: she was able to find the island because that underground building blew up
[20:21] Josh: ic but how did that huge magnetic force get on the island, near the hatch?
[20:22] Matt: they had some device or something underneath the rooms. Remember early on, Said and Jack tried to get into parts of the rooms and couldn’t?
[20:22] Josh: you’ve heard the thing where every so long the magnetic pole actually reverse
[20:22] Matt: they tried to pry the doors and walls open
[20:22] Matt: and realized they were blast doors
[20:22] Matt: ??
[20:22] Josh: was that the first season
[20:23] Josh: no
[20:23] Josh: the hatch was the second season
[20:23] Josh: (Link: http://www.psc.edu/science/glatzmaier.html)http://www.psc.edu/science/glatzmaier.html
[20:24] Josh: north pole becomes south pole and vice versa
[20:24] Matt: thats awesome
[20:25] Josh: yup
[20:25] Matt: What I am thinking happened with the explosion is more of a collapsing of the magnetic fields in on themselves

[20:25] Matt: you know how a black whole will eventually explode
[20:26] Matt: well, there was something that was regulating the zero point, and it collapsed…when they didn’t hit that button
[20:26] Josh: i didn’t know that. I though a star eventually turned into one
[20:26] Matt: Which if the people who made the damn system were smart enough to make it, why didn’t they reset the thing with an infinite loop?
[20:27] Josh: yeah but the button was to discharge. But I don’t see why that would require a human
[20:28] Matt: yeah, you were right, black holes don’t explode..for some reason I thought they did…in fact they eventually disperse by spitting out small particles that take mass from the black hole away
[20:29] Josh: black holes have mass?
[20:30] Josh: . . . btw, you might like the “radio lab” podcast
[20:30] Matt: yeah ill check it out.
[20:30] Matt: I believe that they do….let me make sure
[20:31] Josh: this one is on emergence the last one was called beyond time and had the physicist Brian Greene
[20:32] Matt: thats cool. I will download and listen to it tomorrow…
[20:32] Matt: black holes have energy
[20:32] Josh: but i don’t believe we’ve come to how such a magnetic force formed in the first place.
[20:32] Josh: some places on earth just have more magnetism
[20:32] Matt: no we havent
[20:32] Matt: yes they do
[20:32] Josh: i think
[20:32] Josh: but nothing that much
[20:32] Matt: Also magnetic north is not what the map calls north
[20:33] Josh: yes
[20:33] Matt: but for someone travelling on foot, it is good enough to not make a difference
[20:33] Josh: and maybe there is more magnetic force is near the poles
[20:33] Matt: Apparently, according to this site: http://www.phys.vt.edu/~jhs/faq/blackholes.html#q8 Black holes have the mass equivalent to about a billion suns
[20:33] Matt: I dont remember
[20:33] Matt: about the magnetic forces
[20:34] Josh: ok so I was on the opposite end of the mass of black holes
[20:36] Josh: actually very few things have no mass. like maybe dark matter, heat, light, and magnetic force
[20:36] Matt: and, depending on how you play with light, it demonstrates reactions that suggest it is matter and not infact something else
[20:36] Josh: words
[20:36] Matt: words are sound…
[20:37] Josh: not until they are spoken
[20:37] Matt: which are waves, which can have a force..which suggest that they have mass
[20:37] Matt: but until they are spoken they are electronic synapses in your head…technically stored on the backs of electrons, so they have mass at that point
[20:37] Matt: and depending on the situation and the words, they can be “heavy dude”
[20:38] Matt: also, it helps if you are high
Also, I just want to point out that the scientist is holding rabbit #15, and #15 shows up behind him on the shelves. At which point he says,
“Don’t let them see each other”
Seems a little like Back To The Future?
