UPGRADE YOUR BROWSER

Thursday, September 20th, 2007

Did you know that the browser you are using, or your clients are using is old as hell?

It is.  Well,  I should say it is for some of you. Especially the people who are reading this blog.  What is really funny is that the people who are trendy and joined the Mozilla FireFox revolution and are reading this blog, have some out dated browsers.  (btw if you have Firefox open a new tab and type “about:mozilla”)  Its cool with me if you like the browser you had in highschool, but it should be embarassing to know that I can see you don’t know how to keep your computer secure.

Like I said before, the readers of this blog are not that bad, but my side project (sentletters)  has some outdated browser users.  Here are the results from FireStats for the browsers used on that site:

Sentletters.com User Browser statistics

That is ridiculous.  Did you know that you can get paid $30-$125 per hour to go to people’s houses/places of business and upgrade their software for them?  Throw in a virus and spyware scan once a month, and you have geek squad running for the corners.  (TAKE DOWN GEEK SQUAD!!)

Here are the users for SeoClear:

It makes sense that the people reading this blog would have better browsers, and that they are more likely to actually update them on their own.  Thank you, I appreciate you. Why you ask?

The reason why I appreciate people who update their browser is that they are helping to prevent the asshats out there who are zombifying computers and creating a world wide network of spam machines.   I dislike spam greatly.  I also don’t like getting viruses or dealing with spyware.

If you have an old browser, like the geniuses with Internet Explorer 1.x-5 you are probably infected and causing my email account to filter messages to the spam folder… Thank you gmail spam filters!

Please update your browser, please update your browser, please update your browser.

I needed all the zip codes, Latitudes and Longitudes

Monday, September 17th, 2007

I’m an idiot.

I am working on a project doing some work with latitudes and longitudes, and finding the distances between them. I had a dump from somewhere of all the zip codes in the country with all the city names, etc.

So I hooked up with the Google geolocater service and started hitting their server with requests, to return the lat and long.

I hit it with 50,000 + requests, and they shut me out. Unfortunatly this won’t work, as I need to get the project done. So I started looking through the tubes (the internet is series of tubes you know) and right after I pass a goomba, I find this place…

Its called sourceforge. You have heard of it. Even if you dont realize it. They have everything. Apparently, they have the thing I was trying to create too. I should have known.

The moral is: “If you need all the zip codes, all the cities, and their latitudes and longitudes go here“;

All the latitudes and longitudes you need

Also if you are importing it into mysql, and don’t want to fight the importer of your choice you can download the file: zipssql.zip

It has the sql for creating the table, and inserting all the data, as well as indexing.

Facebook API

Sunday, September 16th, 2007

Wanna make some money?  Make a facebook application.  People who have made them and inserted ads have already made thousands.  All you have to do is make a good application that millions of people want to use, throw an ad or two in there, and VOILA you will see dollar signs.

Honestly, the API is not that hard to figure out, you host the materials you call on your own server, you just have to follow their guidelines for privacy, and use their psuedo programming code to make calls to their database.

Good Luck!
